Assessing mental health literacy and competence: A validity study

You are being asked to participate in a research study. However, before you give your consent to be a volunteer, we want you to read the following and ask as many questions as necessary to be sure that you understand what your participation will involve.

PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH
You are invited to participate in the research project entitled, Assessing mental health literacy and competence: A validity study which is being conducted at Alliant International University under the direction of Danielle Beck-Ellsworth and Dr. Narumi Taniguchi. The purpose of this study is to examine how experts score differently from non-experts on the two measures.

DURATION OF PARTICIPATION IN THE RESEARCH
A total of 140 participants will be involved in this study. The duration of your participation in the study will be up to 15 minutes.

PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED DURING THE RESEARCH
If you agree to participate in this research, the following will be the step by step process.

If you agree to participate, click on the “I accept” button below. You can download a copy of the informed consent and/or the Subject’s Bill of Rights by clicking on the corresponding links. After agreeing to participate, you will be asked demographic questions such as age, gender, ethnicity, education, and eating disorder experience. The first questionnaire includes a vignette with some questions that will ask you what you thought of the vignette (Hay, Darby, & Mond, 2007; Mond, Robertson-Smith, & Veter, 2007). The next questionnaire will have several statements and will ask you to decide if the statements are true or false (Rosenvinge, 2003). The total time for completing these surveys is 15 minutes.

RISKS
We believe that the there are no risks for participating in this study.

BENEFITS OF THE RESEARCH
The only direct benefit to you if you participate in this research may be that you will learn about how mental health literacy and competency are measured. Your participation may help individuals and families with eating disorders in the future.

ALTERNATIVES TO THIS RESEARCH
The alternative is not to participate in the research.

CONFIDENTIALITY
You have a right to privacy and all information identifying you will remain confidential (private), unless otherwise required by law. We will not collect any identifiable information. The results of this study may be published in scientific journals, or be presented at conferences as long as you are not identified and cannot reasonably be identified from it.

SUBJECT RIGHTS AND RESEARCH WITHDRAWAL
Your participation in this study is voluntary. If you choose not to participate in this study, there will be no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled and your relationship with Alliant International University will not be affected. In addition, you may discontinue participation at any time without any penalty or loss of benefits. You may also refuse to answer any questions you do not wish to answer.

We have tried to explain all the important details about the study to you. If you have any questions that are not answered here, the investigator will be happy to give you more information.
